Everything Belongs: The Gift of Contemplative Prayer by Richard Rohr
Intimacy with God: An Introduction to Centering Prayer by Thomas Keating
A Monk in the World: Cultivating a Spiritual Life by Wayne Teasdale
Wayne Teasdale’s A Monk in the World is perhaps one of the most cited books on the contemplative new monastic life. Written in the late 90’s and published in the early 2000s, Teasdale’s book distills the essence of the new monastic movement in its infancy. His other book, The Mystic Heart, is another well-beloved book in the new monasticism field.
Inhabiting the Church: Biblical Wisdom for a New Monasticism by Jon Stock, Tim Otto, and Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove
As in most things, having a biblical foundation for the understanding of a movement is critical. Stock, Otto, and Wilson-Hartgrove’s book equips the new monastic with the scriptural basics of the movement, allowing it to move within the theological frameworks of our day.
Living Faithfully in a Fragmented World: From ‘After Virtue’ to a New Monasticism by Jonathan Wilson
The Monk Within: Embracing a Sacred Way of Life and A New Silence: Spiritual Practices and Formation for the Monk Within by Beverly Lanzetta
The New Monasticism: An Interspiritual Manifesto by Rory McEntee and Adam Bucko
The Seven Story Mountain by Thomas Merton
Another great read about Thomas Merton is Jon Sweeney’s Thomas Merton: An Introduction to His Life, Teachings, and Practices. Both are wonderful for listening on audiobook.
Wisdom Distilled From The Daily: Living the Rule of St. Benedict Today by Joan Chittister
