Join us on Sunday, September 17, 2023, at 5:00 pm Eastern at Grace Episcopal Church, Chattanooga, for a service celebrating the life and ministry of Barbara Clementine Harris, the first woman to be ordained a bishop in the Episcopal Church and Anglican Communion. Our featured preacher is Bishop Phoebe Roaf, Bishop of West Tennessee.
Barbara Harris, born in 1930, grew up in Philadelphia. A Black woman and advocate for racial justice, she was active in the Civil Rights movement. She was ordained a deacon in 1979 and a priest in 1980. In 1989, she was ordained as a bishop and served as the suffragan bishop for the Diocese of Massachusetts for 13 years, followed by four years as assisting bishop in the Diocese of Washington.
A reception will follow the service.
