On Sunday, September 17, 2023, Bishop Brian Cole and the people of St. James Episcopal Church, Knoxville, celebrated 100 years of ministry in the community. The community of St. James was chartered in 1923 with the first part of the church complex being completed in 1927. As the St. James community has lived out its call to ministry and mission in the Knoxville area, it expanded the facilities in the 1960’s and 1990’s. The current rector, the Rev. John Mark Wiggers, is only the fifth rector to serve in St. James’ 100 years.
The day was marked by a festive Eucharist and a reception in the newly rennovated parish hall.
St. James supports a number of ministry programs and offerings to the community including their Neighbor Day fundraiser, Pancake Breakfasts (verified a delicious outing by Bro. Andrew), Room at the Inn, Immigrant Ministry, Prison Ministry, and more. They also offer a number of programs at the parish including Stephen Ministry, EFM, Prayer Shawls and more.
A history of the church design may be found here and a history of the stained glass may be found here.
Here’s to 100 more years!
