Hi, I’m Bishop Brian.
We have a new Archbishop of Canterbury. On Friday, October 3rd, we were made aware that Archbishop-designate Sarah Mullally will be the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury. Prior to this, for several years, she has served as the Bishop of London. She is a great choice. As you pray for her, pray for her, for right now, as the Archbishop-designate Sarah Mullally.
At this time, I would also want to commend to you her opening address, a great opening address. In particular, I want to lift up these words.
In an age that craves certainty and tribalism, Anglicanism offers something quieter but stronger: shared history, held in tension, shaped by prayer, and lit from within by the Gospel [sic] of Christ. That is what gives me hope. In our fractured and hurting world, that partnership in the gospel could not be more vital.
Friends, those words capture the very essence of Anglicanism, not just in this moment, but in every moment. We are a tradition that is old and ancient, yet new and always evermore enlivened by the Spirit. This is a time for us to double down on being Gospel people in East Tennessee, choosing to love everyone, to be a part of everyone, to offer each other in this moment, to engage the gospel on the ground, to care for the stranger and the immigrant, to care for the outcast and the lost, to care for the least of these.
So, I commend to you a new Archbishop-designate. I commend to you her words. I commend to you being the people of God who can live out that Gospel call to be not a people given over to certainty and tribalism, but given over to the Gospel as we have received it in this age and in every age.
